Capoeira is more than just a martial art. It is a vibrant expression of culture, combining music, rhythm, and movement into a powerful experience. At the Swiss Center for Capoeira, we recently completed a unique project that brings this art form to life in a fresh and exciting way. This project features a gathering of Ianomi. a skilled drum player and several capoeira musicians who create an energetic and unique sound. Alongside them, two capoeiristas demonstrate the beauty and fluidity of capoeira through their movements. the video bellow capturing this collaboration offers a glimpse into the high-quality results we achieved.
The gathering of musicians and capoeiristas creates an immersive moment filled with energy
This blog post explores the essence of this project, the role of music and movement in capoeira, and what makes this gathering special. Whether you are a capoeira enthusiast or new to this art, you will find insights and inspiration in the story of how music and movement come together to create something truly captivating.
Bringing Musicians and Capoeiristas Together
One of the most exciting aspects of this project for us was the collaboration between Ianomi, a Brazilian drummer and musician and members of the Swiss Center for Capoeira. Usually, these worlds are distinct, tradition Vs. modern, but here they worked closely to create a seamless experience. And that was just the beginning.
The artists met at the faculty for art in Lucerne, where they had 2.5h to capture the moments you see above. Despite the fact, that due to schedule and time line constraints proper preparation and rehearsing were not possible, the results speak for them selves. With the help of professionals like Andrin Schwendener (sound), Dopemix (mix & master and Cineflight (videography) we were able to optimize the time. The potential can be seeing, heard and felt well. One can only imagine how it would be like with proper preparation time...
This collaboration also highlighted the importance of listening and responding. Both musicians and capoeiristas had to be fully present, paying attention to subtle changes in rhythm and movement. This dynamic exchange is at the core of capoeira’s appeal.
The Heartbeat of Capoeira: Music and Movement
Capoeira is unique because it blends martial arts with music and dance. The music sets the pace and mood, guiding the movements of the capoeiristas. Its essentialy the heartbeat of the fighters and dancers. Traditional instruments like the berimbau, atabaque, and pandeiro form the backbone of the sound, while the players’ rhythms tell a story that the capoeiristas respond to with their movements.
In our project, the musicians came together to explore new ways of combining these traditional sounds. The different cultural expressions of old and new, history and present. The result is an energetic and unique soundscape that pushes the boundaries of what capoeira music can be. This fresh approach invites both musicians and capoeiristas to engage with the art form a new perspective.
The two capoeiristas in the project demonstrate how movement flows naturally from the music. Their fluidity, agility, and timing show the connection between sound and motion. Watching them, it becomes clear that capoeira is a conversation between the body and the instruments.
The Instruments That Shape the Sound
The instruments used in capoeira are essential to its character. Each has a distinct role:
Berimbau: A single-string instrument that leads the rhythm and sets the tone.
Atabaque: A tall drum that provides the deep, steady beat.
Pandeiro: A type of tambourine that adds texture and brightness.
Final Thoughts and prospects
This new project created joindly by Ianomi and the Swiss Center for Capoeira showd the potential in bringing together old and new cultures and arts. How Tradition and modern sounds can coexist and be fused into something new and exciting. The collaboration between Ianomi, the drum player, musicians, and artists results in an energetic and unique sound that brings capoeira to life in a new way.
We aim to initiate further such projects to revive this ancient and new cultures, sounds and arts, and give them all a new and refreshing shapes and forms.
