Capoeira: improving movement, confidence and social skills for children with Autism

ree

A new study shows that Capoeira can have positive effects on children on the autism spectrum (link to the full study below).

Children on the autism spectrum often face unique challenges: movements can be difficult for them, sensory stimuli from their surroundings can be overwhelming, and social situations are often exhausting. However, a new pilot study suggests that Capoeira- the Brazilian blend of dance, martial arts, and music- can help children with autism in many ways.

In the study, parents of children aged 7 to 15 who regularly participated in Capoeira groups were surveyed. Many reported positive changes:

Improved motor skills and body awareness:

The rhythmic movements and playful nature of the training enhanced coordination, balance, and body awareness.

Greater self-confidence and motivation:

The children became more self-assured and showed more initiative- even outside of training.

Stronger social connections:

By practicing together with other children, both with and without autism, they developed a sense of belonging and community.

Capoeira thus creates a space where children can move, express themselves, and grow together- free from performance pressure. The combination of music, movement, and play supports not only physical development but also emotional and social growth.

Although further research is needed, current findings suggest that Capoeira can be more than just a sport- it can be a way to bring the world into motion and connection.
